5 Ways the New Digg Profiles Affect the Top 100 Digg Users

Be Back ShortlyAccording to research by Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz, the top 100 Digg users accounted for 56.41% of all the stories to hit the Digg homepage. The top 20 accounted for 20.81% of front page stories.

These are some of the ways that the fresh batch of changes unrolled by Digg today may affect power Digg users.

The changes that have a significant impact on the power of a top 100 account were made to your Digg profile page and the friends activity page.
New Digg Profile

  1. Shouts allow stories to go viral and spread faster than a wildfire in thick dry brush. Shouts allow you to easily send a quick note or story to friends in your friend list. Even if your friends aren’t logged in they receive the shouts the next time they do. The power of this feature to a 100 Digg user lies in being able to more easily promote stories as they see fit. They no longer have to wait for you to wander upon the story from your friends activity page, they can simply send it right to you.
  2. Favorites are now prominently displayed at the top left of your user profile. So now power Digg users who have thousands upon thousands of profile views can turn those views into more Diggs for their stories, and thus a stronger account.
  3. Recent Activity is now displayed right on your profile page under your favorites. This means everytime a user looks at a profile for a top 100 user they are more likely to view and Digg the stories on that profile page. Naturally that means more exposure for the stories submitted by the Digg 100.
  4. Bio and Links to your favorite sites can now be displayed at the top right of your profile in the about section. Again power Digg users who get a lot of traffic to their profile pages can now promote sites in a better, more prominently placed area at the top right of the profile.
  5. Friends’ Activity has now been revamped allowing you to filter your friends’ activity to display or not display the following activities from your friends: diggs, diggs in upcoming, submissions, comments, favorites, shouts and profile activity. Since power users are simply a lot more active than your average friend on Digg, no matter how you filter it chances are they will still show up. The filters just make you spend more time looking at your friends activities.

    You forgot to mention: other changers suck for top Diggers. Now only headlines show up instead of full stories, so it takes extra time to go in, read the description, click the link to the story and so on. And what if you see a headline you can’t remember having seen (or not) before? Well, you have to click the link of course to find out. This means a lot more time spend on site, which Digg likes, and is a pain for those of us who actually enjoyed the previously user-friendly experience of being a top Digger. Bleh.

    That is definitely something to be considered Suxmonkey, but I am sure we can all understand why Digg would like more time spent on the site. That means more page views for Digg to sell to advertisers.

    SuxMonkey, it also makes it harder for people who only digg their friends to digg every single submission made by friends. The diggs for diggs aspect of the site will be suppressed some. The “top diggers” really only aggregate news from other sites like reddit and Stumble Upon or just plain old blogspam, so this should make the quality of content made popular better. The ‘top diggers’ are not as important as they like to think they are. A lot of them are spammers who know how to play the ‘game’. Game Over.

    not really sure if i care about the “top 100″.. but i do love digg as a site.. i think its the content that is king and not who posts it.. anyway they are just coping someone elses headlines 90% of the time.. no big deal in my eyes.. i try to submit when i can but im not gonna sit in my browser all day ckecking my feeds to see if i can get a story up first..
